Fernandina Beach

After a little bit of a late start checking out the plantation we took off for our stop at Fernandina Beach where we will try and make sure Gloria does not do a face plant this year. Check out the old blog to read about that. Well the thunderstorm came early (about 1:30) and was the worst one this year. Again we had to do an emergency stop, droping the Rocna and about 90 feet of chain on the edge of the channel. The wind about 50+, there were reports of 75, but we are just guessing, with wind driven waves about 4 foot high for about 1/2 and hour then just rain. Then up anchor and move 1/4 mile to the morring, yea we got that close before it hit. Oh yea and we went agound, twice, in the middle of the channel today. There is a new moon and the tides are very low. Tomarrow we will go to the dock and fill up with fuel and water, dont want to think about what that is going to cost!.
A side note: our friend Demi who was tring to catch up with us tonight was waiting for the bridge to open at the north side of the St. Johns River, when a semi truck and trailer went off the bridge into the water. It would have landed on his boat if he was 3 mins. earlier. That is not something we worry much about, I guess I will have to add that to the list.

Fort George River

After leaving St Augustine, the afternoon thunderstorms came with a vengence today. We were just below the St Johns River and we could tell we were not going to make our anchorage. We started looking for a back-up plan but to late the storm came crashing down 40-50 knots of wind and blinding rain. We moved to the west bank and droped the Rocna with 60 feet of chain, held great as the storm moved thru very fast. We pulled anchor and 10 more miles to Ft. George River to anchor for the night. This morning we took the dingy to Kinnsley Plantation, a restored plantation whose owner was a freed slave who then had slaves herself something I had never heard of before.

Anchorage 8 stars
Very short day. WE got anchored and went into town and had a beer, a strange stout, thats the name . We have had this beer, here before and is a favorite of ours. Then off to see Castillo de San Marcos the fort at St. Augustine. Very nice tour and watched them fire 2 cannons which were pointed directly at our boat, very loud and a informative guy telling us all about the forts defences. Had to move anchor in the afternoon thunderstorm as the heavy current and the winds were moving us too close to another boat so we moved to a spot that had opened up. Going in for dinner with Demi tonight so I have to go. Tomarrow we will hang here for the day so I will tell more of St. Augustine
